Rethinking Longevity Through the Concept of “Recovery Capacity”
On my 66th birthday, rather than celebrating with a large birthday cake, I spent the evening enjoying a carefully prepared Japanese course dinner with friends and guests from Tokyo.
As we sat together around the sushi counter, tasting each dish one by one, our conversation naturally turned to longevity.
For many years as a physician, my work has focused on treating disease.
But now, at the age of 66, the question that interests me most is no longer simply:
“How can we live longer?”
I am increasingly interested in a different question:
“How can we preserve the ability to recover, even as we grow older?”
I use the term Recovery Capacity to describe this ability.
From Longevity to Recovery Capacity
The human body is constantly exposed to stress and damage.
Inflammation, oxidative stress, infection, metabolic stress, sleep deprivation, psychological stress, physical injury and aging itself.
Health does not mean that these challenges never occur.
What matters is whether the body can respond to them, repair damage, restore function, adapt, and regain a stable physiological state.
In simple terms:
Stress / Damage
→ Response
→ Repair
→ Adaptation
→ Recovery
I believe that the ability to complete this process is one of the fundamental determinants of healthy aging.
This is what I call Recovery Capacity.
From this perspective, aging may be understood not only as the accumulation of years or molecular damage, but also as a progressive decline in the body’s capacity to recover from repeated biological stress.
This idea is at the center of the medical framework I am developing:
Mitochondrial Recovery Medicine
Mitochondria are central to this concept because they are not merely cellular “power plants.”
They participate in energy production, redox regulation, metabolic signaling, immune responses, stress responses, and cell survival.
Therefore, I am particularly interested in how mitochondrial function interacts with inflammation, metabolism, sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and other biological systems that influence recovery.
Longevity Is More Than Taking the Right Molecules
During my birthday dinner, another thought became especially clear.
Health is not determined only by what we take into the body.
We tasted seasonal ingredients.
We ate slowly, in small portions.
We appreciated the beauty of the dishes and tableware.
We experienced different aromas, temperatures, textures, and flavors.
And most importantly, we talked and laughed together.
There is a dimension of health in these experiences that cannot be expressed simply by supplements, medications, or laboratory values.
Japanese cuisine may already contain much of this wisdom.
And yes, I also enjoyed fried food.
I do not believe longevity should mean continuously removing pleasure from life.
The goal is not to prohibit everything.
The more interesting question is:
Can the body return to balance afterward?
That is another way of thinking about Recovery Capacity.
From Medical Science to Everyday Life
My goal is therefore not to leave Recovery Capacity as an abstract medical concept.
I want to translate it into everyday life.
Into food.
Into sleep.
Into physical activity.
Into human relationships.
Into the way we live each day.
In the clinic, we can study and evaluate Recovery Capacity.
In a restaurant, we can experience it through food, the senses, conversation, and enjoyment.
Through education, people can learn how their bodies recover.
Through communication and media, the concept can become part of society.
Ultimately, I hope we can move toward a culture in which people naturally ask themselves:
“How will I recover today?”
A Culture of Recovery
This is why I have begun thinking beyond conventional longevity medicine.
The ultimate goal is not simply to create more places where people receive medical treatment after becoming ill.
It is also to create environments in which people can maintain and develop their capacity to recover before disease develops.
A restaurant can become one such place.
Not a hospital.
Not simply a “health-food restaurant.”
But a living laboratory where medical science meets everyday life.
A place where we explore how eating, resting, moving, connecting with others, and enjoying life may contribute to a healthier human experience.
I call this broader vision:
A Culture of Recovery
If Recovery Capacity is the scientific and medical concept,
then A Culture of Recovery is its translation into society.

My Next Chapter at 66
At 66, I still have many foods I want to taste.
Many places I want to visit.
Many people I want to meet.
And many things I still want to create.
So my goal is not simply to live longer.
I want to remain capable of enjoying life until the very end.
To eat well.
To move.
To think.
To laugh.
To sleep.
And when life places stress on the body—
to recover again.
That is the kind of longevity I want to explore, both as a physician and as a person entering the next chapter of life.

Not simply to live longer,
but to preserve the capacity to enjoy life.
